A brief summary of issues surrounding the H1N1 Vaccination

  • The novel H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in the fall.  It is expected that 45 million doses will be available mid October.  The balance of the 190 million doses ordered by the government may be available later in the fall.
  • It is currently unknown whether two doses of vaccine will be required until the late summer-early fall, once clinical trials are completed.  Presently, it is assumed that two doses will be needed.
  • Vaccinators should assume 21-28 days between the first and second vaccination, however, the exact spacing will be unknown until information from clinical trials is available.
  • The seasonal flu vaccine is not expected to protect against the novel H1N1 flu.
